Teaching Of History
EDM number 521 in 1990-91, proposed by Nicholas Winterton on 22/02/1991.
That this House welcomes the commitment of the Secretary of State for Education and Science to ensure that the teaching of history leaves pupils with a knowledge and understanding of history, an ability to consider different interpretations of history and the ability to use historical sources; shares, however, the concern of the History Curriculum Association that such laudable aims can only be achieved after a firm grounding in historical facts and a basic knowledge of a chronological series of important events; and urges the Secretary of State to look once again at this matter before bringing forward the appropriate Statutory Order.
This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
