Social Services Departments
EDM number 497 in 1990-91, proposed by Alan Meale on 19/02/1991.
That this House believes that, at a time when most local authority social services departments are already struggling to cope with the volume of work generated by current child care legislation and the new Children Act 1989, which will make substantial additional services available such as family centres, day care help, holidays and after school schemes for children under eight years, together with the provision of extra accommodation and services for young people up to the age of 21 years, it is ridiculous for central government to expect such departments, which are already badly overstretched, to absorb this enormous amount of new, but necessary, work amongst those in need, without extra funding to the authorities concerned; and therefore calls upon the Government to act immediately to supply the finances necessary to meet these needs.
