Grants For Derbyshire County Council Services

That this House recognises the special success of Derbyshire County Council since 1981 in improving the quality of its services; in particular, acknowledges the wide range of excellent provisions made by the County Council to disadvantaged sections of its community and the support it has given to voluntary organisations representing the disadvantaged; accordingly regrets the continued financial pressures imposed by the Government upon the authority which necessitate a further cut of ú41 million in the 1991-92 budget, as such a cut jeopardises the full continuation of services and assistance for disadvantaged groups; notes that if Derbyshire has received the same arrangements for its standard spending assessment as Westminster City Council in the first year of poll tax payments each poll tax payer in Derbyshire would not only have received a nil demand but would also have received a cheque worth ú308; and in such circumstances believes that the very least the Government can do is to cover the shortfall in its grants to Derbyshire County Council.
