Japanese Whaling
EDM number 48 in 1990-91, proposed by Tony Banks on 09/11/1990.
That this House registers its disgust and condemnation of the fact that the Japenese whaling fleet is once again departing for Antarctica to kill some 300 minke whales; notes with anger that Japan has already slaughtered over 800 whales in the name of science despite their programme being repeatedly criticised by the International Whaling Commission; is concerned that whale meat from previous so-called research catches is on sale in Tokyo for up to ú70 per pound; that Japanese coastal fishermen are slaughtering tens of thousands of dolphins and porpoises as a substitute for the meat of larger whales; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make the strongest representations to the Japanese government to stop undermining and flouting the indefinite commercial whaling moratorium and to impose an immediate ban on the slaughter of minke whales, dolphins and porpoises.
