Relief Of Third World Hunger
EDM number 460 in 1990-91, proposed by Alice Mahon on 12/02/1991.
That this House recognises that the Group of Seven summit in July presents another opportunity for the world's richest nations to build the political will and take the practical steps, including the cancellation of Third World debt, to stop 40,000 children dying every day from hunger and easily preventable disease; laments the fact that United Kingdom real spending on aid has decreased in real terms from ú1940 million in 1979 to ú1788 million in 1989; deplores the fact that the Government has no timetable for British aid to reach the United Nations target of 0.7 per cent. of gross national product; notes that the cost of preventing the famine in Ethiopia, the Sudan, Liberia, Mozambique and Angola is equal to the cost of two days of the Allies' Gulf war; and calls on the Government to make the relief of Third World hunger equal in importance with the relief of Kuwait.
