Peabody Coal
EDM number 432 in 1990-91, proposed by John Cummings on 06/02/1991.
That this House notes with concern the intention of Peabody Coal, a subsidiary of Hanson PLC, to expand its coal mining operations of the Black Mesa region of the State of Arizona into tribal territories rightfully owned by the Navajo Indians; notes that in addition to the disruption and destruction of tribal religious shrines, burial sites, and farming of herbs used for medicines, the mining operations pose a serious health risk to the inhabitants of the area through pollution from coal dust and water contamination from dangerous chemicals which threaten the lifeline of both the Indians and the livestock of the area by limiting safe drinking water supplies and damaging the vegetation for wildlife; and urges Her Majesty's Government to show support for the natives of the Black Mesa region in their fight against the selfish intentions of Peabody Coal.
