REFUSAL OF KURSHID BIBI'S COMPASSIONATE VISIT

EDM number 421 in 1990-91, proposed by Bill Michie on 06/02/1991.

That this House notes with dismay that the reasons given by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to the Right honourable Member for Birmingham, Small Heath, for the refusal to grant a compassionate visit by Kurshid Bibi, domiciled in Pakistan, to visit her very ill sister living in Birmingham is that Kurshid Bibi is single and the only member of her family still in Pakistan, all other members of her family having emigrated to this country; and believes that a policy which prevents close family visits in circumstances of serious illness on such unacceptable grounds is to be condemned as contrary to every civilised precept which this country ought to uphold.
