Plymouth Schools
EDM number 367 in 1990-91, proposed by Andrew Smith on 29/01/1991.
That this House condemns the Secretary of State for Education for turning down Devon County Council's plans for reorganising St. Peter's and Devonport secondary modern schools, Plymouth, into the new 11 to 18 years All Saints' Church of England Comprehensive School; believes that this decision condemns a large section of pupils in a needy and deprived area of the City of Plymouth, to using some of the worst school buildings in Britain at St. Peter's and substandard facilities at Devonport; notes that owing to the known increase of rolls in Plymouth schools in the next few years, if proper secondary provision is not made this will lead to a shortage of secondary school places in Plymouth in 1993-94, causing overcrowding in existing comprehensives within the City; congratulates the governors, head teachers and staff of both schools for their excellent work in maintaining high standards throughout this period of uncertainty; is concerned that a decision on a plan of such strategic importance should be subjected to a 15 months delay; and, as this has the full support of Devon County Council, the local community, the Church and the major political parties, calls on the Secretary of State for Education urgently to reconsider his decision on All Saints' School.
