Atomic Weapons Establishment Bill
EDM number 349 in 1990-91, proposed by Allan Rogers on 24/01/1991.
That this House condemns the decision of Her Majesty's Government to proceed to the committee stage of the Atomic Weapons Establishment Bill at a time of national emergency when British forces are engaged in the Gulf; notes that the Bill raises fundamental and controversial questions of the defence policy of the United Kingdom which are wholly inappropriate at this time when the people of the United Kingdom expects Parliament to display unity of purpose; further notes that the insistence of Her Majesty's Government to proceed to the committee stage of the Bill at this time will inevitably cause unnecessary additional strain on the Minister of State, the honourable Member for Plymouth, Sutton, and the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, the honourable Member for Lincoln, and distract them from the serious purpose of managing the British effort in the Gulf; and further regrets the Government's refusal to provide the Committee with the Tombs Report and other vital information necessary to scrutinise their legislation.
