REPORT ON DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL'S POLICE SERVICE (NO. 2)

EDM number 330 in 1990-91, proposed by Harry Barnes on 22/01/1991.

That this House congratulates Derbyshire County Council for the financing of its Police Force, given the financial constraints resulting from poll tax capping, government grant capping and large reductions in capital expenditure; notes that until last year's poll tax cap, Derbyshire County Council had not, in real terms, cut expenditure on its Police Force since 1981; further recognises that, in the face of government demands for local authorities to pay substantial contributions towards the cost of assistance received from other police forces during the miners' strike, Derbyshire County Council successfully campaigned against the imposition of those charges and consequentlty protected its overall police budget; and notes the comments of the Home Office Minister of State, the honourable Member for Oxford West and Abingdon, speaking at a crime prevention seminar in Derby in October 1990 when he said: 'Despite a national crime wave, Derbyshire's offences per head of population are substantially lower than elsewhere in Britain'.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
