Family Government Of Saudi Arabia

EDM number 327 in 1990-91, proposed by George Galloway on 22/01/1991.

That this House notes that British forces are currently fighting, some perchance to die, to defend the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; further notes that the government of the Kingdom is not a democratically elected one and that no less than 27 of the most important positions in the Saudi Arabian government are occupied by members of the same family; further notes that the reactionary legal system in that country provides for the surgical amputations of the hands of those convicted of the offence of theft, the severing of the head by sword in a public square of those convicted of capital crimes, the stoning to death of women convicted of the crime of adultery, and the recent wholesale arrest of Saudi women for the offence of driving a car; and wonders if the British forces in Saudi Arabia have been briefed as to the nature of the regime they are being asked to defend.
