Liverpool Playhouse Theatre
EDM number 284 in 1990-91, proposed by Robert N Wareing on 14/01/1991.
That this House deplores the fact that the Liverpool Playhouse faces the prospect of closure; notes that this state of affairs has been brought about by a reduction of public funding of ú218,000 in real terms since 1988; contrasts the present situation with that before 1986 when the former Merseyside County Council provided the financial security upon the five district councils to provide necessary resources given that they have themselves been starved of Government financial assistance in recent years; acknowledges that the current economic recession threatens both box office takings and business sponsorship; believes that the Playhouse should receive Government assistance to continue to play its excellent role as a nursery for the country's acting profession; and calls upon the Minister for the Arts to attend the launch of the public campaign to save The Playhouse when he visits Liverpool on Friday, 18th January.
