"dispatches - Against The Odds"
EDM number 251 in 1990-91, proposed by William McKelvey on 18/12/1990.
That this House, mindful of its responsibilities to the general public, was appalled by the revelations shown by the Channel 4 television current affairs programme Dispatches-Against the Odds screened on Wednesday 12th December, which exposed how large bookmaking companies have been and are currently manipulating the return prices on course, of race horses and greyhounds engaged in racing for betting purposes in the United Kingdom; and in the light of this information and the fact that such activities are costing United Kingdom punters up to ú150 million per annum in lost winnings or returns, calls upon Her Majesty's Government to instigate an immediate enquiry by either the Office of Fair Trading or the Home Office to ensure the end of such practices in the interests of the racing industry as a whole, those who bet, as well as the rules of honesty and fair play.
