Measures To Reduce The Number Of Obscene Telephone Calls
EDM number 233 in 1990-91, proposed by Eric Martlew on 12/12/1990.
That this House expresses grave concern at the continuing high level of obscene and malicious telephone calls, which at present is estimated as being in excess of eight million calls per year in the United Kingdom; urges that the Government have immediate talks with British Telecom and other communication networks to ensure that the calling line identity scheme is made available, for controlled public use, as soon as practicable, as this system will dramatically reduce the number of those pernicious calls which cause fear, disgust and distress to the victims who are overwhelmingly women; and also urges that the law be amended to increase the penalties for those convicted of making these cowardly and callous calls.
