Grenada

EDM number 215 in 1990-91, proposed by Harry Cohen on 11/12/1990.

That this House expresses concern about the unconstitutional nature of the court in Grenada which has sentenced 14 people to death and three to life imprisonment; notes that this trial began while United States and other foreign forces were occupying Grenada contrary to international law; particularly objects to the irregularities like all the judges being on temporary contracts, a prosecuting attorney resigning then being appointed the next day to supervise selection of the jury, families of the defendants being denied access to the court for a long period of the trial, and the seizure by the United States of documents vital to the defence and not made available; and therefore considers it essential that the Grenada court system should be regularised and made constitutional by returning it to the Organisation of East Caribbean States Court System, which allows the right of appeal to the Privy Council, and that the sentences be quashed on the basis of these and other irregularities.
