Occupation Of East Timor

EDM number 201 in 1990-91, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 10/12/1990.

That this House notes that 15 years ago Indonesia invaded East Timor, killing a third of the population, and occupying the country; draws attention to the parallel with the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait; believes that the same principles of not letting an aggressor remain in possession of territory annexed in defiance of international law and the United Nations Charter should apply; emphasises that the principle of self-determination must govern any settlement of East Timor; and calls on the Government to make it clear that the people of East Timor have the same right to determine their political future as the people of Kuwait.
