Enlargement Of The National Health Service

That this House believes that none of the real and serious problems facing the National Health Service will be solved by the list of 56 hospitals and other National Health Service sections which the Health Secretary announced on 4th December are due to opt-out from April 1991; condemns the 4,500 planned bed closures being made by health authorities to finance these changes and others associated with the completion of an internal market; is astounded to learn that for the last six years, at the former Royal Air Force base at Little Rissington, near Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, there has been a modern, 1500-bed hospital which, according to the Evening Standard has `plastic layers that cover everything from soap to bed linen', and is one of three similar United States Air Force establishments in the country; and believes that rather than bed closures facilities such as these ought to be opted-in to the National Health Service to bring down the disgraceful levels of waiting lists and to provide the best facilities at all times for working class people and their families.
