Cycling In Cambridge

EDM number 172 in 1990-91, proposed by Simon Hughes on 05/12/1990.

That this House notes with concern the ridiculous proposal by Cambridgeshire County Council to ban bicycles from Cambridge city centre, and the extraordinary disruption and disadvantage that this would impose on the ordinary lives of Cambridge residents including the large number of students; believes that the ú15,000 cost of the scheme would be better spent on limiting the movement of motor vehicles which, unlike bicycles, pollute and cause significant numbers of deaths and injuries each year; and calls on the County Council to drop these mad proposals and to spend the ú15,000 on the improvement of signposting and demarcation of cycle lanes for the safety of cyclists and the rest of the public.
