Allerdale Timeshare
EDM number 169 in 1990-91, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 05/12/1990.
That this House notes the quite ill-considered comments of Mr Tony Perry, Chief Executive of Allerdale District Council, as reported in The Independent newspaper on Friday 30th November; notes that Mr Perry gravely and irresponsibly damaged the interests of Allerdale's poll tax payers when he stated that Credit Suisse could go and whistle for their money, that is money lent for the construction of the Keswick Timeshare project; questions whether at a time when Allerdale needs to pursue sensitive discussions with Credit Suisse, the best interest of poll tax payers is served if the chief executive is allowed to make such damaging and irresponsible statements to the national media; asks whether councillors, including the Chairman of the council, were consulted before Mr Perry made his insulting statement aggravating the condition; notes that Mr Perry cannot deny he made such a statement as the honourable Member for Workington has checked with Ian Mackinnon, the Independent journalist, the contents of his press notebook; believes that Mr Perry and senior council officers, instead of hiding behind threats of writs and claims for substantial damages against former council leaders, newspaper editors, the honourable Member for Workington and anyone who criticises his competence over the time share, should come clean and make a full statement as to how Allerdale was drawn into the Keswick Spa and Timeshare venture risking rate payers' money; and believes that Tony Perry deliberately misled Labour councillors in 1985 and 1986 for whatever reason over alternative options for the Time Shares development.
