Privatisation Of Infertility Treatment

EDM number 1278 in 1990-91, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 18/10/1991.

That this House notes that five general practitioners from Hackney: Dr Tobias, Dr Kenyon, Dr Begley, Dr Southgate and Dr Zalidis, have condemned St. Bartholomew's Hospital for privatising infertility treatment; notes that the general practitioners have questioned both the morality and the legality of requesting money for the treatment of NHS patients, many of whom have already been accepted for treatment; notes that the general practitioners believe that it is appalling that `special offers' are being made to patients who are extremely anxious and often distressed about their infertility; and condemns St. Batholomew's Hospital and the Government, who know about what is going on, for boasting about the so-called benefits of this privatisation.
