Rights Of N.h.s. Patients In East Birmingham

EDM number 1256 in 1990-91, proposed by Terry Davis on 16/10/1991.

That this House notes that East Birmingham Health Authority has arranged for East Birmingham patients at Moseley Hall to be transferred to a voluntary sector nursing home to be provided by Coventry Churches Housing Association; notes that there will be fewer beds for the continuing care of East Birmingham patients in the National Health Service as a result of this arrangement; also notes that some patients will be required to pay for their accommodation and for services such as chiropody as a result of being moved to a voluntary sector nursing home and that some patients will be forced to sell their homes to pay these charges; further notes that the East Birmingham Health Authority failed to consult the patients, their relatives, the Community Health Council and local honourable Members about this reduction in beds and transfer from the National Health Service to voluntary sector provision; condemns this arrangement as another example of creeping privatisation of the National Health Service; and calls for the dismissal of the managers who are responsible for this secret sabotage of the rights of patients to continuing care which is free at the point of delivery.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
