Differential Levels Of Vehicle Excise Duty
EDM number 125 in 1990-91, proposed by Nicholas Winterton on 27/11/1990.
That this House believes measures to introduce differential levels of vehicle excise duty on different sizes of motor vehicle, as defined by engine size, are not necessary since the present balance of taxation, whereby fuel taxes are collected in larger amounts from users of larger vehicles, or from those covering more mileage, adequately accounts for road track costs and environmental pollution; further believes that there is no case for militating against the use of larger motor cars, including some which are major British manufacturing successes, and which have many and varied practical and necessary uses; and concludes that such measures would have substantial and harmful effects on the resale value of used cars.
