Conduct Of Hon Members For Rossendale And Darwen And South West Surrey
EDM number 1245 in 1990-91, proposed by Eddie Loyden on 15/10/1991.
That this House deplores the insensitive and unwarranted attack on the city and people of Liverpool by the honourable Members for Rossendale and Darwen and South West Surrey; condemns the Minister for the Environment's reference at the Tory party conference to 'unleaded churches' in the city as an insult to the people of Liverpool and in poor taste even by Tory standards; further condemns the Minister for Health's remark that 'if you are vulnerable and needy, don't live in Liverpool' as a reflection on those who work under great difficulties in the caring services and the voluntary sector; believes that, while respecting the right of free speech, Ministers should not make cheap jibes at the expense of cities like Liverpool, but should address the real problems of mass unemployment and poverty due to the last 12 years of Tory governments which have cut central government funding by millions of pounds; and further calls on the honourable Members for South West Surrey and Rossendale and Darwen to withdraw their statements and publicly to apologise to the city and people of Liverpool.
This motion has been signed by a total of 40 MPs.
