Poll Tax In Scotland And The Conservative Party Leadership
EDM number 120 in 1990-91, proposed by Alex Salmond on 26/11/1990.
That the House notes that the most important factor in bringing down the Prime Minister was the poll tax and that, in the dying hours of her administration, even she was prepared to offer concessions in an effort to save her position; congratulates the Scottish people for their role in resisting its imposition; further notes that all three Conservative leadership contenders are now vying with each other on which will change the poll tax first and most; demands that the victorious candidate immediately spells out the detail and timetable for fundamental change in the iniquitous tax; and calls on Labour regional councils in Scotland to immediately halt the persecution of the poor through the threat of poinding and warrant sales given that even the Tory leadership no longer believes in the poll tax and there is clearly no majority in the House of Commons for the poll tax in anything like its current form.
