MIDLANDS' HISTORIC COUNTIES
EDM number 1191 in 1990-91, proposed by John Butcher on 24/07/1991.
Categorised under the topic of Local government.
That this House notes that the West Midlands Metropolitan County Council no longer exists, but that road signs, maps and postal addresses still make references to this defunct body; request the Secretaries of State for Transport, the Home Department and the Environment to advise all appropriate bodies to revert to the historical county boundaries of Warwickshire and Worcestershire for postal, road signing and map making purposes; and further advises the Secretaries of State that the term 'West Midlands' is now sources of great confusion in so much as residents of the region are no longer sure whether 'West Midlands' refers to the conurbation once represented by a metropolitan county council or the broader mix of rural counties and urban districts which stretches from the Welsh borders to the eastern boundaries of Warwickshrie and from Staffordshire to the southern boundaries of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
