Sale Of Cemeteries By Westminster City Council
EDM number 1048 in 1990-91, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 01/07/1991.
That this House condemns the sale in 1987 by Westminster City Council of cemeteries at Hanwell, East Finchley and Mill Hill; notes that the consequent loss to Westminster poll tax payers has been some ú2 million in terms of lost assets and incurred expenditure; condemns the incalculable distress caused to relatives of those buried in the cemeteries because of the gross neglect in the cemeteries' upkeep over the past four years; notes the serious allegations that the council is negotiating a secret deal with an off-shore company reportedly to cost Westminster residents a further ú2 million but without guaranteeing adequate standards of future maintenance; urges the Council to adopt the position of the Westminster Association of Relatives and the Westminster Labour Group in seeking to have the original transaction, already described by the District Auditor as unlawful, declared void in court; and calls for a full public inquiry into this whole shameful affair.
