Labour Party Policy On Europe
EDM number 1038 in 1990-91, proposed by David Howell on 25/06/1991.
That this House notes the verbose obscurity of the Labour Party on the question of a single European currency and on almost every area of policy under discussion in the Inter-Governmental Conferences; notes the Labour Party's regular about-turns over Britain's membership of the Community; notes the intellectual contortions on this subject by the majority of the Shadow Cabinet; regrets that the Labour Party can agree only upon Socialist doctrines such as the imposition of a social action programme which would add billions of pounds to the costs of British employers, destroy hundreds of thousands of British jobs and undermine the economic gains brought by Conservative policies for deregulation and enterprise; notes the divisions within the Shadow Cabinet itself as evidenced by the fact that eight members of the Shadow Cabinet are also shown as members of the Labour Common Market Safeguards Committee; and calls upon the Labour Party to state its real position on Europe to the British people.
