National Arts Day, June 24
EDM number 1009 in 1990-91, proposed by Tony Banks on 20/06/1991.
That this House welcomes the celebration of National Arts Day on 24th June, Midsummer Day, as an occasion to draw attention to artistic activity across the country; believes an annual day of celebration will give wider publicity to the nation's cultural achievements as being worthy of receiving greater recognition and investment; acknowledges that the arts reflect the country's traditions, values and multi-cultural way of life and have earned the admiration of the world in addition to cutting across many of the human divides, and further believes a National Arts Day will demonstrate that the arts do not belong to the periphery of daily life but at its centre where they can contribute significantly to our wellbeing and quality of life.
