Tv Licences For Solitary Senior Citizens
EDM number 10 in 1990-91, proposed by Martin Smyth on 07/11/1990.
That this House, recognising the loneliness which can be imposed by age and the isolation suffered as families scatter, aware of the need of older people to keep contact with what is happening in the world at large and in their own community, thus sharing in the social, political, cultural, sports, entertainment and new programmes provided by television and realising the sense of injustice felt by those denied access to residential homes provided with free television, calls upon the Government to extend the provision of free television licences to all single senior citizens on basic pensions and up to the margin of private pension equivalent to the licence fee where such pensioners are living alone
