Publicity By The West Midlands Health Authority

That this House notes that the proposals of the West Midlands Regional Health Authority for the closure of the general hospital in Birmingham, the transfer of the accident hospital to Selly Oak and the concentration of several regional specialties on the less accessible site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have been widely criticised in Birmingham; further notes that the regional health authority has spent thousands of pounds on a supplement to the Birmingham Daily News designed to look like an integral part of the newspaper and thus persuade the people of Birmingham that it is an impartial and independent assessment of these proposals; and urges the Secretary of State for Health to instruct Sir James Ackers, the Chairman of the Regional Health Authority, to make the same amount of money available to the community health councils in Birmingham to publish their criticisms of these proposals in the interest of fair play.
