Channel Tunnel Health And Safety
EDM number 969 in 1989-90, proposed by Dennis Skinner on 09/05/1990.
That this House is angered at the latest tragic death of a construction worker at the British end of the Channel Tunnel and sends its deepest sympathy to the family of William Cartman, the 33 year old who died on 7th May; believes the escalating cost of the project is forcing the pace of construction work and that hundreds of reportable injuries, and now six fatalities, is the price being paid by the workers; notes the Secretary of State for Employment's planned meeting with the senior management of Trans Manche Limited; and calls on the Government urgently to amend the Employment Bill to give workers the statutory right to stop unsafe jobs and to refuse dangerous work, and to make a prison sentence mandatory on an employer where gross negligence is proven in the event of a death or serious injury.
