Nelson Mandela
EDM number 925 in 1989-90, proposed by John Carlisle on 30/04/1990.
That this House notes the comments made by Makaziwe 'Maki' Mandela in the South African Sunday Times of 8th April where she differed sharply with her father on the effects of sanctions, asked how people could fight apartheid whilst they were starving, realised that sanctions had cost thousands of jobs for those who can least afford to lose them and stated that 'my father is not Jesus Christ, he's just a human being, the Mandelas always had a plate of food on the table and a nice house; the people who know better are the unemployed men in Soweto, searching through dustbins for food'; and trusts that Right honourable and honourable Members and notable Church and public figures outside who support sanctions should abandon their self-righteous opinions and listen to this daughter of a famous father who understands the real effects of economic hardship.
