Conduct Of The Opposition And Hong Kong

EDM number 886 in 1989-90, proposed by Edwina Currie on 23/04/1990.

That this House warmly welcomes the Second Reading given to the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Bill by a majority of 97; applauds the honest, practical and straightforward speeches of the Home and Foreign Secretaries; regrets that neither Opposition front bench spokesman was able to say how many the Labour Party favoured admitting from Hong Kong; notes their cynical discrimination against those who have created wealth of given loyal public service; concludes that the absence of either clear policy or firm leadership led to 54 Labour Members failing to support their own Front Bench; and calls upon each of those 54 Members to explain whether they instead supported the Government, washed their hands of Opposition ambivalence, could not make up their minds or could not be bothered to respond to a three line whip.

This motion has been ammended, see 1004A1.

This motion has been signed by a total of 8 MPs.
