Human Fertilisation And Embryology Bill
EDM number 872 in 1989-90, proposed by Ann Winterton on 19/04/1990.
That this House notes with concern recent press reports which have suggested that pre-implantation diagnosis and screening for genetic disease would be prevented if the House were to vote for a ban on human embryo research; further notes that such practices would in fact be allowed to continue under the provisions of Schedule 2(1)(d) to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill through which licences may be given for practices which are designed to secure that embryos are in a suitable condition to be placed in a woman or to determine whether embryos are suitable for that purpose; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Health to clarify this point in responding to the forthcoming debate on Clause 11 of the Bill.
