Amendment To Abortion Legislation

EDM number 863 in 1989-90, proposed by Emma Nicholson on 18/04/1990.

That this House believes that abortion should be available to pregnant women with the consent of one general practitioner up to 12 weeks' gestation following which time limited abortion on specified grounds should be available to certain categories of women, including those where the pregnancy puts at grave risk their physical or mental health, those where the mother is unfit, through illness or otherwise, to look after a child, those where a foetal abnormality has been identified and there is a strong possibility that a child could suffer a condition both incurable and wholly destructive of quality of life and those where conception takes place in certain specified circumstances including rape, child abuse, and where the mother is a minor at the time of conception, which would bring United Kingdom abortion laws in line with practice common in Europe and North America; and calls on the Government to consider this amendment to present abortion legislation.
