Home Secretary And The Poll Tax In Scotland

EDM number 840 in 1989-90, proposed by Alex Salmond on 03/04/1990.

That this House believes that the Scottish people require an apology from the Home Secretary for his association of non-payment of the poll-tax with violence; notes that the massive non-payment campaign running in Scotland over the last year has been disciplined, orderly and totally non-violent and that the huge demonstration in Glasgow on Saturday was both good-natured and peaceful; suggests that if the Government continue their attempt to smear 750,000 peaceful non-payers in Scotland by association with London thuggery, then the Tory vote in Scotland will sink below even its latest level of 15 per cent.; and calls on the Labour Party and trade union leadership to understand that it is their abdication of responsibility for the popular anti-poll tax campaign in England which has created the political vacuum into which fringe organisations have moved.
