Korean President's Visit: Repeal of National Security Law
EDM number 83 in 1989-90, proposed by John Battle on 27/11/1989.
That this House, noting President Roh Tae Woo's visit to the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Hungary as another step towards easing tensions between East and West as well as North and South Korea, and noting the promises made by President Roh in 1987 and 1988 that his government would establish an elected and civilian system of government, end torture and political imprisonment and guarantee freedom of speech, is gravely concerned at new reports of torture and evidence that more people are being detained now than under the previous government of Chun Doo Hivan; and calls on President Roh Tae Woo to repeal the National Security Law which has been widely used since 1948 to suppress political activities that should be perfectly legitimate in a democratic society.
This motion has been signed by a total of 50 MPs.
