Poll Tax Demonstrations In London And Glasgow

EDM number 829 in 1989-90, proposed by Jimmy Wray on 02/04/1990.

That this House condemns the violence which took place in the anti-poll tax demonstration on 31st March in London; judges the poll tax to be in itself an act of moral, economic and political attack on the people of this country who according to recent research will now be substantially worse off as a result of such unjust legislation; but firmly believes that, even under this considerable act of provocation, riots, attacks against people and destruction of property are not the democratic way to react; compares this objectionable behaviour with the anti-poll tax campaign in Scotland, which for more than a year, has been winning the argument in moral, economic and political terms and which demonstrated its democratic, effective and peaceful character in one of the biggest demonstrations ever to be held in Glasgow on the same Saturday 31st March; and congratulates the Scottish organisers, participants and police forces for this lesson in dignified and peaceful action.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
