Increases In State Pensions

EDM number 786 in 1989-90, proposed by Ieuan Wyn Jones on 23/03/1990.

That this House notes that in 1980, the basic state pension received by a married couple was 40 per cent of full time average earnings, but by now, the figure is a meagre 30 per cent.; notes that 46 per cent. of pensioner households depend on state pensions and benefits for at least 75 per cent. of their incomes; further notes the study undertaken by King Edward's Household Fund for London which showed that the decline in mean household income after retirement was steeper in Britain than in the United States of America and West Germany; demands that the Government undertake regular annual reviews of the level of pensions; and further demands that the rate of pension is calculated on the current rate of annual average earnings, or on the retail price index, whichever is the highest.
