Access To Tv Broadcasts For Deaf People
EDM number 75 in 1989-90, proposed by Keith Vaz on 27/11/1989.
That this House deplores the insensitive attitude of the broadcasting bodies who write off the importance of the deaf community by not including subtitling or sign language in the vast majority of their programming; calls upon the Government to ensure that any legislation in the future will put an obligation on those broadcasting bodies to ensure that deaf people have the access to television broadcasts to which their full licence fee entitles them; and calls upon the Select Committee on Televising of the Proceeding of the House to place an obligation on television companies who transmit pictures from the House to provide subtitles and sign language interpretation to give complete access to parliamentary proceedings for the deaf community.
This motion has been signed by a total of 74 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
