Human Rights In Iraq
EDM number 745 in 1989-90, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 15/03/1990.
That this House condemns the execution of Mr Farzad Barzoft and the 15 years imprisonment for Ms Daphne Parish; recognises that despite previous international outcries there has been no change in the human rights situation in Iraq, which remains one of the worst in the world, as demonstrated in recent reports by Amnesty International and the United States State Department; further notes that despite this human rights record Iraq has been receiving export credits annually from the United Kingdom since 1984, amounting to a total of over ú2 billion; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to act within the European Community and the United Nations for co-ordinated diplomatic pressure and the imposition of economic sanctions on Iraq, including an arms embargo, until the respect for human rights in that country has reached an acceptable standard.
This motion has been signed by a total of 36 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
