Channel Tunnel: Services To The North

EDM number 739 in 1989-90, proposed by Keith Bradley on 15/03/1990.

That this House, mindful of the need to ensure the necessary rail infrastructure and service provision is in place to enable the North of England to exploit to the full the benefits from the opening of the Channel Tunnel and the Single European Market, rejects the plan put forward by British Rail for the dispersal of traffic from the Channel Tunnel to the regions, given its total failure to meet the needs of the North in either passenger or freight terms; and urges the Government to review section 42 of the Channel Tunnel Act 1987 and instructs British Rail together with local authorities, the private sector and northern interests to develop realistic and achievable proposals which respond to the levels of anticipated demand in the North.

This motion has been signed by a total of 21 MPs.
