Poll Tax And Youth Training
EDM number 712 in 1989-90, proposed by Jack Thompson on 13/03/1990.
That this House is deeply concerned that YTS trainees, 17 years old and over, will receive a miserly ú35 from which those over 18 years will have to pay at least 20 per cent. of the poll tax; agrees with the Rathbone Society that many YTS trainees with special needs, some of whom have forfeited disability benefits to gain a place on YTS, will be affected most; notes that while a young person's 18th birthday should be a time of celebration, many will suffer a drop in personal living standards; and further calls upon the Government urgently to correct this unfair arrangement by increasing payment to over 18 YTS trainees to compensate for poll tax payments.
