Council Rent Rises
EDM number 641 in 1989-90, proposed by Clive Soley on 01/03/1990.
That this House condemns the disgraceful rent rises being forced on councils by the Government; notes that the average increases are particularly savage in the London Borough of Merton, at ú11.14 per week, Redbridge at ú15.64 per week, Canterbury at ú12.29 per week, Reigate and Banstead at ú9 per week, and Bournemouth at ú9 per week; further recognises that the Government's guideline increases, which range between 0.95 pence and ú4.50 are as unrealistic as their poll tax estimates because they do not take into account inflation and the effects of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989; further congratulates those Conservative councillors in West Oxfordshire who have resigned because of the Government's rents and poll tax policies; and calls on other Conservative councillors and honourable Members of the Conservative Party in Parliament to insist that the Government abandons these unnecessary, harsh and inflationary measures.
