Taiwan

EDM number 587 in 1989-90, proposed by Henry Bellingham on 20/02/1990.

That this House, bearing in mind the collapse of Communism worldwide, urges Her Majesty's Government to consider reviewing its relations with Taiwan, the Republic of China, which has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and the largest foreign reserves after Japan; further recognises that in 1988 this nation of 20 million people had a two-way world trade of US$88 billion and foreign reserves holdings of US$74 billion; and concludes that it is now time for Her Majesty's Government to make this review, and further improve trade between the two countries in recognition of the fact that Taiwan is now a major player in world economic affairs.

This motion has been signed by a total of 16 MPs.
