Mr Sydney Downham and the Proposed Closure of the Lodge Elderly Persons' Home, Scarborough
EDM number 551 in 1989-90, proposed by David Hinchliffe on 15/02/1990.
That this House congratulates Mr Sydney Downham, a 98 year old First World War veteran, on the efforts he and his fellow residents of the Lodge Elderly Persons' Home, Scarborough, are taking to prevent the closure of their home which has been proposed by North Yorkshire County Council; notes that this closure is part of a series proposed by this Tory-controlled authority, including Neville House, Gargrave, Woodfield House and Starbeck House, Harrogate, Fircroft, Tadcaster, Sutton House, Thirsk, Royal Crescent, Whitby and Linton Lodge, Wetherby; and recognises that such closures are likely to become commonplace as local authorities face the blatant financial discrimination against council-run homes contained in the National Health Service and Community Care Bill and vastly reduced resources as a result of the introduction of the poll tax.
