Expulsion From South Africa Of Mr Paul Weaver
EDM number 510 in 1989-90, proposed by John Carlisle on 12/02/1990.
That this House notes that Mr Paul Weaver, a journalist employed by the Today newspaper was asked to leave South Africa following a series of articles that were misleading, bore little resemblance to the truth, and were written to exaggerate incidents in a manner that, according to other responsible commentators, was far removed from the actual fact; further notes that one graphic report giving the impression of an eyewitness account and signed as such by Mr Weaver was completed without him being present; and questions the integrity of the editor, Mr David Montgomery, in his leader of 7th February when, while defending Mr Weaver's articles he describes them as 'good journalism.... something of which we can be justly proud.'.
