Future Of The Royal Shakespeare Company

EDM number 502 in 1989-90, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 08/02/1990.

That this House believes that the decision of the Royal Shakespeare Company to close its London theatres for a period as an economy measure is a national scandal which illustrates perfectly the cynical contempt with which the Government views art, dramas and our country's heritage; is horrified that a philistine Government is prepared to allow a priceless national asset to be treated in such a shabby and demeaning manner; condemns the pathetic response of the Arts Council to the tragedy; notes that the Government, even on its own miserable criteria, has constantly refused to provide adequate funding for the Royal Shakespeare Company; and calls on all right-thinking people to express their concern and anger with the wretched position in which the Government has left this once proud and great company.

This motion has been signed by a total of 40 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
