Employment In The Footwear Industry

That this House notes the concern of employees working in the footwear industry in this country, many of whom are facing short-time working and redundancy, which they believe is caused by the high level of low cost imports coming into this country, together with the Government's application of a high interest rate economy; and calls upon the Government to support the call of the Trades Union Congress for a social clause to be included in all trade agreements to ensure that the conditions of employment of workers in all countries that trade with the United Kingdom and EEC shall be at least equal to International Labour Organisation standard.
