Latin America, Britain And Europe
EDM number 459 in 1989-90, proposed by Jimmy Wray on 06/02/1990.
That this House sees no valid reason for the very low priority accorded by Her Majesty's Government and the EC to Latin America; believes that our mistake in abandoning Latin America to the aggressive and exploitative practices of the United States interests is partly responsible for the social turmoil, the poverty and the repression which affect many people in Latin America; finds particular shame in both the disgraceful saga of the international debt, resembling more a loan shark operation at international scale than a respectable financial deal, and the International Monetary Fund policies which have forced the Latin American governments to apply damaging economic and social measures just for the sake of ensuring that powerful and wealthy people in the northern hemisphere can continue to prosper at the expense of the poor; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to reverse their approach to Latin America and together with other European countries to launch a new initiative responding to the democratic authorities and movements of Latin America which need our active presence and material support to carry out their policies for economic growth, social justice, democracy and real self-determination; and also calls all the European parliaments and the EC Parliament to urgently debate this issue which, like our support for Eastern Europe, is so relevant to our own prosperity and peace.
This motion has been signed by a total of 36 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
